Honorable Mention - Furniture
The goal of this cabinet was to make a functional yet visually stimulating piece. I wanted to engage the viewer in a way to get them to examine the cabinet and be inclined to investigate. The hinges are hidden and one instinctively reaches for the opposite corner of the door to open it. The items pictured are all Hawaiian staples: saki cups, Spam, shoyu sauce, poi, saimin noodle bowls, smoked hot sauce, rock salt, and rice flour. The veneer is all hand sliced: wenge, koa, maple, milo, anegre, European beech, mahogany and poplar.
"The playful trompe-l'oeil fools the eye, creating a sense of wonder."
